Overdo update
Wow, weeks have passed, and I haven't given an update since Jordan's last follow-up. My, some major things have taken place.
The major thing that happened is that the stimming returned. One Sunday morning, I left his chicken legs cooking in the oven while we went to church. My husband noticed it when he returned home and let me know of my mishap. He said they weren't too bad, and since they were cooking on a lower heat than normal, I thought they could be salvaged. However, on Monday, when I came home from work, and after he had dinner, I heard him stimming. And it was a lot!
One difference was that I introduced a new supplement. We started off with half a pill for several days, then one whole pill. He had been on one pill for quite some time, so I doubted that the supplement was the cause. The other difference: the overcooked chicken.
I researched on the internet how overcooked chicken could be an issue for someone with a sensitive system like Jordan, and found that dry chicken contains higher levels of histamine. And there you have it. After some time, the stimming decreased, but it didn't stop. I was kicking myself because Jordan was doing so well, and now it was almost like I had to start all over again. I continued to think about what could be the culprit, and that led me to the latest supplement. So I removed that as well. The stimming has stopped for the most part. He jumped around in his room some on Saturday, which threw me off a little. But then I remembered that my little cousin and I went into his room, and that was the reason. It caused sensory overload because he doesn't like a lot of interaction with certain people. My cousin is one of them.
The supplement he was taking, Histaminx, was to help his body with environmental allergens and histamine imbalances. He was doing ok with it until the spike in histamine with the chicken. You would think that the supplement would help with the breakdown of histamine from the chicken. Instead, it was too much histamine for his body to break down properly, which caused an issue. I should have known it was an issue because I heard him sneezing after starting the supplement. I didn't put the two together until today when I did research to write this post. And that's one of the reasons why I love my God.
He orchestrated this entire ordeal because if things had not gone the way they did, I might not have noticed the issue with the Histaminx supplement and done more damage if I had kept it a part of his routine. Because he had overcooked chicken, which caused the stimming to return, and continued on the supplement, which didn't allow them to fully subside, I had to look at this a little closer. I needed to understand why a histamine supplement wasn't helping with a histamine issue, which led me to realize that he didn't need histamine support in the first place. I wouldn't have found out otherwise because I overlooked the sneezing that took place when it was added.
I learned two lessons from this ordeal. One: God speaks to us in multiple ways. He does things to get our attention when we are preoccupied with other things and not listening to Him. Even when we aren't seeking Him, He's speaking to us. Two: God looks out for us. I could have continued to give Jordan a supplement he didn't need because it wasn't negatively affecting him. Instead, He allowed me to forget the food that was cooking on a lower temperature than usual, which caused an issue that persisted after the symptoms subsided. Although there is no long-term effect from taking a histamine supplement, it could cause digestive upset, reduce its effectiveness, and, most importantly, be a waste of resources on something unnecessary.
After sitting with Psalm 46:10, I learned something else. It reads, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!" (NKJV)
Sometimes we need to be still in tribulations when we know how to fix it. The reason for that is that He wants to show Himself. We need to be still because we forget what He is capable of, and sometimes that He is real. Had I stopped the supplement when Jordan began to sneeze, I wouldn't have seen the goodness of God and have yet another thing to give Him thanks for.
When you are facing difficulty and want to go into fight mode, stay still. Let Him do what He does best, so He will get the glory He deserves.
