The workings of Jordan's many supplements

Every now and then I go through and read my blog, to see what it's like reading it from the outside looking in. It doesn't really work though, most of the time I just find mistakes to correct. As I was reading my last post I thought to myself that I gave a glimpse into my day, and over time I've given a brief overview of some of the things Jordan has to take, but don't think I ever gave a full description of all of the supplements that have been added to his diet over the years and what they do. I'll start at the beginning.

The first supplement that was ever introduced to Jordan, well there was 3 at one time but we'll start with the Multi Flora Spectrum. This is a probiotic. This is an intensive care formula that provides high potency, broad spectrum support for gastrointestinal health. It is actually one of the most potent formulations available in the marketplace. Studies have determined their ability to adhere to and colonize the gastrointestinal tract. Also to resist gastric and bile salts (chemical fluids produced in the stomach and liver) and improves lactose digestions and supports immune response. It has a combination of six important microorganisms for total coverage of the small and large intestine. Every 6 months or so he switches from that to Pro-Bio Gold so he doesn't develop a tolerance for one or the other. Now the Pro-Bio Gold uses the same strands but is less potent that the Multi Flora Spectrum. However it was formulated for persons with special requirements and sensitivities.

The second was cod liver oil. I started out using a brand, Twinlab, because it was considerably cheaper than the Nordic Naturals brand I buy now. But I changed because there were slight differences in them that made me believe that the latter was the better brand. The first had no Vitamin E added and the cholesterol was almost doubled. There is a lot more vitamin D but he gets that from capsules and another supplement he takes. The vitamin E is added to certain brands of cod liver oil because they can become rancid over time with exposure to air and heat and peroxides develop in it and the vitamin E stops what is called the potential oxidation process. The cod liver oil supports heart and brain health and essential for proper functions of the immune and nervous systems.

The third added was Enzym-Complete/DPP-IV. This product is formulated for to support maximum digestive health for a full range of foods. It is a blend of 17 pure plant based enzymes that are essential for digestion of all the food groups. The DPP-IV (dipeptidyl peptidase-IV) enzyme supports the ability to degrade the peptides formed from exposure to gluten or casein. However Jordan still can not have gluten. It also replaces enzymes that are lost in food due to cooking and lessening the burden on the body's digestive tract and supporting nutrient absorption.

The DMSA, which I explained in an entry a few ones prior to this was the next thing added. However he takes that every other weekend, every 4 hours.

Next added was almost 2 years later. The Threelac was supposed to have been added 2 months prior to this one but I managed to overlook it. What was added was the Super Nu-Thera which is a multi-vitamin/mineral. This is also formulated for those with dietary sensitivities or requirements. The version he takes contains P-5-P (pyridoxal 5-phosphate) which is added for those who do not completely utilize the usual form of vitamin B-6.

After over two years of just the DMSA, ALA (alpha lipoic acid) was added with it and both at an increase in dosage. Everything he takes starts of small and gets upped a little a later. The main used for this with Jordan is for it to help with the production of glutathione which aids detoxification. ALA enters all parts of the nerve cells and crosses the blood-brain barrier.

After reading up on DMG and some of the effects is has had on some children with autism, I thought it might benefit him, mainly to help with his speech. It does a lot of things, which as I read doesn't seem like anything that will help him other than it being an immune system modulator. It has since been removed from his diet about 6 moths ago.

The Detox-Aid Advanced Formula followed. He started off with 1 pill for 1 week, 2 pills for 1 week, and ended with 3 pills. This aid is also an antioxidant which assists in removing everyday toxins from the body that come from environment and some foods. The CDC says the average human body has more than 200 toxins and ridding them is a good idea for anyone and especially for individuals with sensitivities, developmental disorders and/or compromised detoxification pathways.

When the DMG was taken from his diet the doctor wanted me to add a specialty product of the supplier I buy from called Speak Smooth. A fatty acid essential in supporting normal and healthy speech development and maintenance. It has concentrated and purified omega-3s from fish oil and natural vitamin E.

After routine blood work his vitamin D levels were very low. He was put on a Rx by his primary care and when I received the tablets, the bottle said they may contain traces of peanuts. I put a call into my doctor who told me it was up to me, may be a problem, may not. I ordered the vitamin D from his supplement provider and he started at 400 mgs. Next blood work his levels were up 27 from 19, but needed to be closer to 50. She increased to 800 mgs and it improved to 44. The beginning of this year we gave him 1000 mgs for two weeks and now 3 months later when the cells have died off and new ones are produced, I will have more blood work done to see the improvement. Probably in the next few days.

L-Glutathione was added for the same reason as the ALA stated above. To add to the body's natural glutathione production to better help to detoxify. It is also an antioxidant. This comes in capsule and cream form. I use the cream on him and apply to different parts of the back every night.

I started to be a little concerned with him possibly having a build up of yeast. Maybe a few weeks later or less  I noticed I was missing the Threelac supplement and implemented it into the diet. The Threelac is a probiotic that delivers the organisms live into the intestine in large numbers. The ingredients can help control occasional digestion and stomach problems, and crowds out "bad" flora in the intestines. These organisms also go through the digestive tract eating the candida and yeast.

The last thing to add was the Methylcobalamin or B12. It is the most active form of the vitamin and it promotes proper neuronal function and is the only one that can be utilized in the central nervous system. This gram of powder he dissolves under his tongue. He is just now starting to get back to normal sleeping habits after starting this supplement.

Lastly I was told by the doctor that I could give Jordan Quercetin. This is yet another antioxidant that will help aid with reaction to allergies. I wanted to give Jordan this but he would have to take this 3 times daily and I believe it's year round. I did not give this to him even though he has had some very bad allergic reactions in the past where the whites of his eyes had swollen up and were yellow, because I wanted to see how his immune system was holding up with everything that I am doing to build it up. This year wasn't too bad. He only had a runny nose.

I hope this gives you an insight as to why I give Jordan what I do and what it all does. And how they all work together to help build his system to be what it was supposed to be.
